OCSAA Essentials

Dear School Administration and Parents,

There are some essentials to take into consideration when building a sports program and they include:

Physical Health
Children who play sports or participate in daily physical activity have a lower risk of becoming obese and developing related medical problems. Participating in extracurricular sports can help children maintain a healthy body weight and reduce their risk of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Academic Achievement
Children that are signed up for school sports teams many times lead to surprising result in terms of academic achievement. Studies have observed children throughout the world have noted that reading and math scores were consistently higher in kids that participated in school sports. Some studies did not find a positive influence on grade point average but pointed out that classroom behavior and self-esteem improved with the additional sports time, which can also lead to a better learning environment.

Social Behavior
A child’s feeling of self-worth and learning of social behaviors can be helped greatly through extracurricular sports. Meeting new friends, working together as a team and developing a healthy competitiveness are important strides in social and emotional growth that all children experience. Playing sports encourages these roles as it allows our children to experience confidence as they master each skill; they also grow emotionally as they learn to handle the disappointment of losing a game.
